Overcoming Anxiety: When To See A Podiatrist
Our feet are one of our most used body parts, but they also tend to be the most neglected in terms of healthcare. There are many reasons for this – some people aren’t sure where they should go to seek treatment, some believe that foot pain or discomfort is normal, some don’t like their feet being touched, and some are embarrassed about their feet or toenails.
Whatever the reason, seeing a podiatrist can be an anxiety-inducing experience for many people.
The caring and knowledgeable team at Midland Podiatry is dedicated to helping our patients live long, healthy, and active lives free from foot pain and discomfort. We understand that many people experience anxiety when seeing healthcare professionals, like podiatrists, and seek to make the experience as warm and comfortable as possible.
Signs That You Should See a Podiatrist
If you’re experiencing any of the following problems or symptoms, you mustn’t ignore them and should book an appointment with a podiatrist.
- Persistent Pain
If you feel constant pain in your feet, you should address it sooner rather than later. Pain can have many causes, such as plantar fasciitis, Achilles tendonitis, or a stress fracture – ignoring pain can lead to further complications and even permanent damage. - Changes in Skin or Toenails
If you’ve noticed any discoloration (such as yellowing or darkening), thickness, or brittleness in your toenails, this could be a sign of a fungal infection or other issue. Similarly, any new or changing moles on the feet should be checked (while skin cancer on the feet is rare, it does happen). - Difficulty Walking or Standing
This issue could be caused by several issues, such as plantar fasciitis, arthritis, or even flat feet. Ignoring these issues can cause them to worsen, making it even harder to walk or stand for long periods. You may need custom orthotics or even physical therapy to treat the pain. - An Injury That Isn’t Healing
While it’s normal for a foot injury to be tender and sore for a few days, if you notice that this pain and discomfort continues you should see a podiatrist. Other warning signs to look for that a foot injury isn’t healing correctly are redness, swelling, and warmth to the touch. - Painful or Recurring Calluses and Corns
Calluses and corns often develop due to repeated friction or pressure on the feet, and they can become painful or uncomfortable if left untreated. In some cases, the development of these growths is due to a more serious foot condition, such as a bone spur or hammertoe.
Overcoming Anxiety When Seeing a Podiatrist
If you’re experiencing some anxiety around the prospect of needing to see a podiatrist, there are some things you can do to help overcome this.
- Address the Reason for Your Fear – The first step in managing fear is to understand its source. Think about the reason you don’t want to see a podiatrist – are you anxious about the pain of having a procedure, have you had a bad experience with a healthcare professional, are you embarrassed of your feet?
- Ask Questions – Some people find that asking questions before their appointment can help to give them peace of mind. If you have any friends or family who’ve seen a podiatrist, ask them about the experience. Also, feel free to give the podiatry clinic a call and speak with someone there.
- Schedule Your Appointment Carefully – When booking an appointment day and time, consider your usual stress levels – if you’re anxious about seeing a podiatrist, going at a time when you’re already stressed will just heighten your emotions. If you’re flat out on Mondays, try to book on a more relaxed day.
- Bring Someone Along With You – A support person can help ease stress and anxiety levels for many people. They can provide a comforting presence, moral support, and even advocate for your care (if you’re in no state to do so). Just make sure the person you choose is supportive and won’t add to your stress.
- Tell Your Podiatrist – Your podiatrist won’t laugh or think you’re silly if you tell them that you’re feeling a little anxious. In fact, they’d much rather know how you’re feeling so that they can take steps to put you at ease. Opening up about your anxieties can help you develop a better relationship.
